Second Hand September: A Movement for Sustainability and Unique Style

Second Hand September, launched by Oxfam in 2019, is a global campaign encouraging consumers to avoid buying new clothing for the entire month of September. It aims to raise awareness about the environmental impacts of fast fashion while promoting sustainable alternatives like secondhand and vintage shopping. As the fashion industry faces scrutiny for its waste and resource consumption, Second Hand September offers a way for consumers to make a positive impact through their purchasing decisions.

The fast fashion industry contributes to significant environmental challenges, including textile waste and excessive resource usage. Each year, millions of tons of clothing end up in landfills, with the production of new garments consuming vast amounts of water and energy. Second Hand September focuses on reducing the demand for new clothing by encouraging consumers to shop secondhand, which extends the life of garments and lessens the overall environmental footprint.

As awareness of sustainability grows, so too has the resale market. According to ThredUp’s 2023 Resale Report, the secondhand fashion market is projected to reach $77 billion by 2025, outpacing the fast fashion sector. This growth shows that consumers are increasingly turning to secondhand options not just for environmental reasons but also for the appeal of unique, high-quality items. Second Hand September is perfectly aligned with this shift, offering an opportunity for consumers to make conscious choices.

Chevy’s Vintage will be participating in the **Pickwick Vintage Show** on **September 28th** at Row DTLA. Specializing in vintage clothing and accessories, Chevy’s Vintage offers carefully selected pieces that align with the goals of Second Hand September. The Pickwick Vintage Show is known for its range of vendors offering unique and timeless items, making it an ideal event for shoppers looking to participate in sustainable fashion.

Although Chevy’s Vintage won’t be selling at ‘A Current Affair’, the team— Chevonne and Bruce —will be visiting the event on Saturday, September 14th, at the historic Cooper Design Space in Los Angeles. For them, A Current Affair is a favorite spot to connect with the vintage community and discover new inspiration.
